(c)overt Modality in Generic Sentences

چکیده

On the assumption that ISs involve a silent generic quantifier GEN, which is taken to be a modal operator, it has been argued (Krifka et al. 1995) that GEN can have different interpretations, corresponding to those of overt modalities in ISs sentences. In this view, (2-a) would be interpreted as in (2b), and the silent operator GEN in (2-a) would have the deontic flavor of the overt modal must in (2-b). One of the aims of this paper is to show that GEN is not the silent counterpart of overt modality.

Exceptions to Generics: Where Vagueness, Context Dependence and Modality Interact

This paper deals with the exceptions-tolerance property of generic sentences with indefinite singular and bare plural subjects (IS and BP generics, respectively) and with the way this property is connected to some well-known observations about felicity differences between the two types of generics (e.g. Lawler’s 1973, Madrigals are popular vs. #A madrigal is popular). I show that whereas both I...

Meaning of Generic Sentences

It has sometimes been proposed that generic sentences make statements about prototypic members of a category. In this paper I will elaborate this view and develop an account where generic sentences express quantification about the normal exemplars in a category— here and in counterfactual worlds sufficiently similar to our own. Comparing the account to the currently most widespread analysis whi...

Covert Emotive Modality Is a Monster

It has been argued that attitude verbs shift reference of indexicals in the embedded clauses in some languages (Schlenker 1999, 2003; Anand and Nevins 2004). I argue that not only overt attitude predicates but implicit emotive modality is a context shifting operator which changes context parameters. I base my argument on the following three mono-clausal constructions: i) fake past; ii) fake pre...

Preschool children's use of cues to generic meaning.

Sentences that refer to categories - generic sentences (e.g., "Dogs are friendly") - are frequent in speech addressed to young children and constitute an important means of knowledge transmission. However, detecting generic meaning may be challenging for young children, since it requires attention to a multitude of morphosyntactic, semantic, and pragmatic cues. The first three experiments teste...
